Founders Blog – Labour & Wait

Founders Blog, Rachel Wythe-Moran & Simon Watkins – Labour & Wait

What is the origin story of Labour & Wait how did it all begin?

Labour and Wait began back in 2000, when Rachel Wythe-Moran and Simon Watkins had become disillusioned with the nature of retail. We worked in the fashion industry and didn’t like the way that everything had to change every six months or sometimes even sooner. As individuals we had always been drawn to simple, classic and timeless items whether that be clothing or household goods. We wanted to create a business which championed those indispensable items which are often overlooked in the rush for the new. We found that some of our most favourite possessions were things we had owned for years; why was it so difficult to find these timeless objects? We started making lists of all the items we wanted. Everything we sell must function well but must also look good. Everyday activities are enhanced by using well-designedand attractive implements.

Why did Labour & Wait become a  founding member of the Guild 10 years ago?

We joined the guild at the beginning, because bringing together the many voices of the myriad businesses in the area, makes for a stronger entity. We wanted to help protect the unique character of our neighbourhood, and the individual businesses which make it what it is.

What has been the most valuable aspect of Guild membership for you since you joined?

The guild has been successful in helping its members with rent negotiations.

How has your business changed in the last decade?

We are very fortunate that our business has grown considerably in the last decade. Our shop on Redchurch Street has become a much-loved destination, and we have been able to expand our company from this anchor point. We now have a strong online business, which was our saviour during the pandemic. We have also recently opened a second shop in the West End.

What do you want people to know about Labour & Wait?

Labour and Wait continue to do what it always has done! We work with suppliers and makers who are experts in their field, showcasing items which have been in production for many years alongside new discoveries. We are also proudly working with several small cottage industries that supply us with quality handmade goods.
