Maps have been designed, printed, and distributed by Guild member businesses and freelancers and have been delivered by cargo bike via zero-emission companies Zhero and Zedify. Illustrators are Sam Brewster and Matt Curtis for Waltham Forest, Duplikat Press for Hackney, and Herb Lester for Tower Hamlets where Aldgate Press undertook the printing.
Small local businesses from London’s East End have been devastated by the pandemic and don’t have the budget for the big billboards of the large global brands up west. With the support of the Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Hackney Councils as well as William Morris Big Local, Second Home London, Wood Street Walls, and the Stow Brothers we all pulled together to create three handsome maps of the membership for each borough.
This act of collective solidarity makes businesses more visible in the run-up to Christmas with each participating member supporting their fellow comrades by distributing maps to discerning customers who want to support their community to recover from the recession and to find truly distinctive, quality gifts, services, and experiences for their loved ones.
When everyone makes the choice to help our neighbours by spending locally, even one small act of conscious consumer power can make a big difference to family-run businesses and the knock-on effect helps the whole community. This is especially true during the seasonal trade when members rely on Christmas to get through the rest of the year. Guild members are working incredibly hard to negotiate for fair rents, to keep customers safe, and to hold onto the local employees who rely on these crucial local jobs.
This important initiative unites members across race, class, and gender divides by a shared experience and belief that small is beautiful.
The Guild includes cutting-edge tech companies, craft brewers, garages, opticians, restaurants, social enterprises, and bookshops as well as some of East London’s most historic independent companies.
“Driven by necessity, East Enders have always devoted themselves to invent ingenious and creative ways of making a living, defining East London as the center of innovation and enterprise in the capital for more than three centuries – from the jacquard weavers of the eighteenth century to the code writers of our own time.
It is this enduring culture of resourcefulness which makes the East End such a vital place and which is championed today by The East End Trades Guild, cherishing our small shops and independent businesses”
The Gentle Author, Spitalfields Life. Co-founder of the East End Trades Guild.
