Mexican Day of the Dead
October 28, 2017 @ 12:00 am - 9:00 pm
Mexican Day of the Dead Festival on
Columbia Road – 28th October 2017 from 12pm.
The Mexican…is familiar with death. [He] jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, celebrates it. It is one of his favorite toys and his most steadfast love.‘
The Labyrinth of Solitude’ by Octavio Paz.
Mexican Day of the Dead Festival is, despite its name, a joyful celebration honouring the passing of loved ones. It is believed that for this one night the spirits of the loved ones and ancestors return. They are honoured and remembered by their families and friends on Earth. Flowers are an
intrinsic part of the festival. Yellow flowers, such as marigolds, are used to decorate the houses so the spirits can find their way home. Flowers also
symbolise the transience of life.
Columbia Road shops will be celebrating Mexican Day of the Dead Festival on 28th October 2017 from 12pm onwards. The street is the stage and we invite you to join us to be other than you are.
