Have your say on the new business rates fund before its too late!
Today the last chance for Hackney members to have their say on the new business rates fund for discretionary relief. Be sure to read the council’s proposals and fill out the survey here, before midnight tonight.
Tower Hamlets have now launched their consultation too and Tower Hamlets based businesses have until 19th October to read about the proposals and feedback here.

Guild Rep Leadership Training
Background
There is a power imbalance where global finance and large corporations dominate decisions that affect the way that we run our businesses, and live our lives. The work of the East End Trades Guild helps to redress that power imbalance by growing a diverse, broad based membership body of small businesses and the self employed who stand together for collective action on common interests from a position of strength.
Building on our excellent track record of gaining a better deal for our members through taking our 10,500 strong business rates petition to 10 Downing Street, winning an audience with the Mayor of London at E. Pellicci, with the Mayors of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, and by redefining the landlord and tenant relationship with our members in East London’s arches. Now, we invite you to help create a shared plan for the next phase of action.
Through training our members, together we will develop a system of representation, sharing Guild power and accountability across the membership, making our Guild more democratic and sustainable for the long term. Training will equip members with the skills and tools to help grow our Guild, and to represent members interests in meetings with decision makers and in the press.
When and where will it take place?
Date and Time: Wednesday 11th and Wednesday 18th October from 15.30 to 17.30
Venue: Spitalfields City Farm, Buxton Street, E1 5AR. Nearest overground stations – Shoreditch High Street or Bethnal Green. This venue is wheelchair accessible.
Programme Overview:
This training consists of three modules over two, two hour workshops. Modules are – Power, Leadership and Listening. We will reconvene at a workshop on 22nd November and again on 24th January to feedback and shape the plan for 2018.
Training is being delivered in partnership with the New Economics Foundation. Experienced and professional Community Organisers Krissie Nicolson – Director, EETG and Stefan Baskerville – Principal Director, Unions & Business at the New Economics Foundation will illustrate organising tools with stories, participatory learning and via leadership in action through listening.
This work will enable us to broaden the numbers of small businesses we engage with, helping us to recruit more members. Importantly, it will also give us a deeper understanding of the common interests affecting small businesses in East London, so we can develop an effective strategy for 2018 and beyond.
Who can apply?
Anyone from a business that is in membership of the EETG can apply for this training, including employees as well as business owners. We welcome applications from all interested members. Priority will be given to active members of the Guild who have recruited others to join.
We are looking for our first historic quorum of trained leaders to help us grow and sustain the first inclusive 21st century union for small businesses and the self employed. Interested in making history?
