Guljar Kaan is proprietor of restaurants Masala and Ghandi’s, both situated on Brick Lane. Guljar was five years old when he came to the area from Bangladesh, then there were only a handful of curry houses on Brick Lane. Having grown up in the East End he has a great affection for it. “The East End has everything, the culture, my friends. The world is at your fingertips, the multiculturalism, it’s beautiful! There was a lot of racism when I was growing up though, but the racist people would come and shake the hands of the business owners, and sit down and enjoy a curry. Curry has broken down barriers and brought people together, it’s the nation’s favourite dish!”

Guljar was just 18 years old when he started life as an entrepreneur. One of his childhood friends called him up and they begun their first curry businesses in 2004. Guljar has a great love of food and searches high and low for the best chefs, and to make sure that his curries are to his satisfaction he samples them himself. Guljar’s favourite curry is chicken Jalfrezi and advocates this dish as one of Masala’s specialities. Oliur Rahman a local resident and long term chef at Masala won the famous ‘Cook Off’ during the London Olympics!
