East End Independents’ Day!

Our members rolled up their sleeves to put on some amazing events, talks, workshops and walking tours for East End Independents’ Day Saturday 3rd December 2016! Listed below are some of the activities that took place. We are working towards our next East End Indie Day and will announce the date in the summer.




Step into a magical world on Columbia Road from 10am to 6pm where you can seek out performers from Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland, who will be entertaining families. The Royal Oak will be offering up mulled cider and hot chocolate to keep you warm. The Alternative London Shopping & Making Tour will include a spray paint workshop at their premises, a visit to the amazing Barn the Spoon to watch him carve and to learn about Green Wood Culture, and a ukulele workshop with the Duke of Uke at Newspeak House!


There’s bags of fun at Ella Doran‘s paper bag making workshops to make your very own gift bag by hand.
Workshops will be held at Dandy Star, 126 Columbia Road, E2 7RG on 3rd December. Workshop Times:

The Broadway Market and Well Street Food Tour, begins at 11am and will include The Broadway Bookshop where celebrated chef Oliver Rowe will be cooking up tasters and mulled cider outside the shop. 4COSE will be sampling the highest quality produce from European countries to mark fellowship with our neighbours. The Five Points Brewing Company will talk about their brewery with slurpings of beer for thirsty walkers.


Participants will stop at the historic F.Cooke for East End delicacy jellied eels, and get the insider’s history of Pie & Mash from Bob Cooke himself. On the right day ten different kinds of oyster can be sampled at Fin & Flounder with condiments to suit, walkers will find out what the catch that day is at London’s Oyster Bar destination. Lucky travellers will also dazzle their taste buds, tickle their ears and feast their eyes at The Deli Downstairs Christmas Food Fair where Benny & the Cheesegrinder is playing and Archie Proudfoot is live painting on the walls!


Chatsworth Road is winner of Time Out ‘Love London Awards’ and they’re celebrating food, drink and history from their independent retailers with a walking tour run by Hackney Tours. On this two hour walk you’ll meet some of the local businesses that create Chatsworth’s own particular flavour and then taste the food and drink that attracts visitors from all around. You’ll also hear about centuries of colourful and radical Hackney history en route – and possibly the food trend of tomorrow?


From 9am to 5pm at the historic Well Street Market launch look out for Emily Griffin discussing sustainability, up cycling and slow fashion at Mahala, Job Wise Enterprise will be at Well Street Pizza, telling us how they empower young people in Hackney to harness their business skills. Upstarter will run a new business workshop. The Gun Pub on Well Street are hosting members The Five Points Brewing Company for a Tap Takeover & Meet the Brewery event. There will also be live music, Christmas lights and London’s first Teenage and Student Makers Market!


Don’t miss the Christmas Market at FOUNT London with a designer Maker and Print Fair outside East End Prints shop. Fantastic designers and makers like Meraki Meraki, Rose Richardson-Map Artist, Zoo Fold and Jane Smith are trading together with the lovely Ekhaya and East End Prints! The wonderful group of traders are taking over the Fount London courtyard will be selling food, prints, ceramics, homewares and everything in between! Not to mention the fantastic Italian food from neighbours at Il Cudega.


Small Business 100 alumni Turning Earth are holding one of their Ceramics Sales all weekend! And Caroline Bousfield will be giving members of the public a go on her potters wheel in Victoria Park!




On Roman Road Alternative London will host the Women of the East End Walking Tour, taking in EETG members along the way! The tour begins at 3pm and finished with an East End Women’s Museum talk at G. Kelly, Pie & Mash served with beer from the fantastic Five Points Brewing Company! At Snap Store artist Stathi Papadopoulis will be live drawing a cosmic Christmas scene in the shop window! Butler & Stag are hosting an art competition with works displayed by Olga Primary School children in their window. More for the grown ups with fine wine tasting at Italian restaurant Symposium!


The Roman Road Christmas Fair will be full of seasonal treats and festive fun including Santa’s grotto, a Winter market, craftiness for the kids, delicious hot food and drinks and a plethora of seasonal entertainment. Lia Choi CEO of Marybow Property will be manning the joint East End Trades Guild and Roman Road stall to talk about our work, and we’ll be selling our beautiful limited edition Tatty Devine EETG brooches!




To celebrate East End Independents’ Day, Tatty Devine co-founder Rosie Wolfenden will share behind the scenes stories and give you an insight into how running a business on Brick Lane has changed over the last 16 years. Tatty Devine is the go to brand for original and fun, acrylic statement jewellery, founded in the heart of East London in 1999 by Harriet Vine MBE and Rosie Wolfenden MBE after graduating from Chelsea School of Art. The talk will begin at 12pm at their Brick Lane shop.


At members Spitalfields Farm there will be Carol Singing to the Animals from noon till 1pm – with their own choir leading the singing! Wild Club child activities from 10am – 3pm – where young’uns can make decorations using as much glitter as possible! There’s the find the Xmas Puddings – treasure hunt with a difference, face Painting and chestnut roasting. Santa is due to arrive at 1pm to open the grotto and Mrs Claus will be on hand to help out. The Farm Shop will be selling handmade Xmas gifts and seasonal vegetables. Entry is £5 and includes a glass of mulled wine/cider or a soft drink and a mince pie!


Alternative London will run two tours from 3pm that will cross from Shoreditch to Spitalfields featuring talks from Paul Gardner in his shop and a workshop visit to Ally Capellino and Dragana Perisic! Participants will be privileged to meet the inimitable Carol Burns from legendary C E Burns & Sons to discover the secret history of the East End.  There will be a visit to Warren’s  gaff – Cafe Caribbean in Spitalfields market, where the last few independents of the market are our members – InSpitalfields, Source and A.Gold. They will experience a jaunt through ancient Artillery Passage taking in the heavenly scents of Angela Flanders Perfumery and on through to Leyden Gallery for their latest exhibition and some fine wines!
